Introducing a brand-new
Youth-Led Fishing Competition in Tangimoana!
First things first, WHO ARE WE
He Ngākau Rangatahi is a youth development programme delivered by Te Aroha Noa Community Services, creating meaningful opportunities for young people to discover their strengths through leadership, education, Te Taiao and community engagement.
Our kaupapa is simple — keeping rangatahi at the centre.
We believe every young person deserves the opportunity to lead, belong, and succeed. By reconnecting rangatahi with te taiao, culture, whānau and community, we create experiences that build confidence, resilience, teamwork and a strong sense of identity.
Our Youth-Led Surfcasting Competition is a reflection of this vision. Rather than simply participating, our rangatahi are responsible for planning, organising and delivering the event. From registrations and event management to health and safety, activities and prize giving, they take ownership while being supported by Whanau, Mentors and their community.
Our mission
Why We Created This Competition
The He Ngākau Rangatahi Youth-Led Surfcasting Competition is more than a fishing competition.
It is an opportunity for rangatahi to step into leadership, develop confidence, strengthen teamwork and build lasting connections with whānau, community and te taiao.
Unlike traditional competitions, our rangatahi are not simply participants.
They are the planners, organisers and leaders of the event.
From planning meetings and sponsorship, to registrations, marshalling, prize giving and event delivery, our young people take ownership of every stage of the project while being supported by mentors and community partners.
Our goal is simple:
Create opportunities where rangatahi lead, whānau support, and community stands beside them.
Promoting community and conservation
Our competition is more than just fishing; it's about building strong community bonds and fostering a deep respect for our natural environment. We believe in teaching responsible angling practices for a sustainable future.
